Edge Pro Apex 4 Knife Sharpener
Hello everyone. It has been a while since I’ve done a review, but I’ve gotten my hands on this new knife sharpener called the Edge Pro Apex 4 Knife Sharpener. I got it in hopes that it would surpass all my other sharpeners, and it’s asking for quite the price to do that at $250.
Let’s go through the description and my impressions.
The Edge Pro Knife Sharpener was designed by Ben Dale, who researched knife sharpening for over a ten year period.
EdgePro, which can be found at www.edgeproinc.com, is a company that focuses strictly on knife sharpening. They sell a few models that have been thoroughly tested to satisfy even the most picky customers.
The Edge Pro Knife Sharpener is quite a portable knife sharpener, which you can unmount and carry in a small case. Once mounted, it looks like a stand with an arm to sharpen. There are succion cups under the device which you must firmly stick to the table.
The Edge Pro Knife Sharpener can sharpen most types of knives.
You can sharpen at a lot of different angles, which are selectable through the colors on the pivot. Sharpening include 10, 15, 21 and 24 degrees. You can check the manual for information on which angle to use for all kinds of varieties of knives. The different stones are pretty easy to switch as well.
To begin sharpening, you need to carefully follow the instructions and learn the method step by step. Sharpening with Edge Pro Knife Sharpener includes a little water and the movement is one that goes forward and back. Your hand gets pretty close to the blade, but everything is calculated in the method so that nothing goes wrong.
As you do this forward and back motion, you eventually move the knife to repeat the process all the way to its tip. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a learning curve to this, but it’s very satisfying. The system looks weird, but it’s well thought out.
What I liked
I really liked how versatile the Edge Pro Apex 4 Knife Sharpener is. It can take on a lot of sizes and shapes of knives. I found that it worked great and my blades were extremely sharp after I put them through the process.
I liked how this feels like a method that was perfected again and again, and the results showed. But maybe even more importantly, I was able to improve my results with time, and I feel like I can achieve just about the ultimate result right now.
What I disliked
I must admit that I didn’t like the succion cups too much. If you have the right type of counter, sure it will stick, but if the surface doesn’t fit, you have a problem. Of course, there are solutions to this such as using a damp cloth to make the surface more humid, or you can use a wooden board and drill some holes.
However, to me it’s getting all too complicated already compared to other systems that you could just place anywhere and use. Of course, the reasoning behind this is that the Edge Pro Knife Sharpener must be very well in place so that the forward and backward motion can work without movement, but it’s still a downside to mention.
So to sum it up, the method on the Edge Pro Apex 4 Knife Sharpener is truly effective, but it’s not made for beginners. If you’re looking for a way to sharpen knives that require absolutely no investment or learning on your part, the Edge Pro Knife Sharpener isn’t for you.
There are plenty of alternatives out there when it comes to quick and easy sharpening. The Edge Pro Knife Sharpener is for those who obviously want a system that was designed by a pro and that provides professional, customizable and manual sharpening. If you know what you’re doing, chances are that the Edge Pro Knife Sharpener will be your dream come true.
Finally, I must say the explanatory videos from Knifecenter on YouTube are truly informative and well-done. The method might be a bit complicated for beginners, but at least there are some resources to improve your technique.
