Wusthof Precision Edge 2 Stage
In the end, I actually went ahead and bought it myself as I needed a more portable sharpener to carry everywhere.
Once it arrived, the first thing I noticed was the quality of the build. I told myself that this was a good sign.
There’s a sticky grip so that it’s well secured in your hand and it’s well made to work safely.
Even if this is made to be a more mobile option, the sharpening is quite professional.
It’s done in two steps, which are the two slots on the device. Each one will do its job to provide you a quality blade in the end.
According to the descriptions, the first slot contains hard carbide steel blades and is labelled “coarse” to take the metal off your knife first. Then, the second slot applies a more subtle finish to your knife giving it the fresh cutting feeling you’re looking for. Fine ceramic rods take care of this second stage.
You can hear and feel the difference at each stage and how it works on your knife in different ways. I haven’t read that it was possible to do this, but I personally give my most used knives a little sharpening on the second stage to keep them working at their best. It allows me to be very precise in the kitchen.
I wasn’t able to find a lot of information about the company besides that it’s based in Germany and that it’s pretty much known all around the world. They’ve focused on making knives since they began their operations back in 1814.
What I liked
There’s plenty to like about the Wusthof Precision Edge 2, but I think the main thing that will interest people here is just how versatile it is. The Wusthof Precision Edge is a general use tool that can sharpen ANY knife you can find around your kitchen. Sure, it will work better on some models than others (and you can check the web and some videos for the best fits), but it will sharpen anything.
Then, I like how the concept is simple to understand for anyone. You can pretty much tell a friend who has never done it “Here, sharpen this knife” and there won’t be any problem. It’s a fully manual process, so there’s no noise or anything to plug in. This tool definitely has an advantage when it comes to saving space and avoiding accidents. If you live in a small apartment, this will ideal.
Also, the Wusthof Precision Edge 2 won’t slide on your counter with the special texture at the bottom and there are no lubricants necessary for use. When it comes to other sharpening systems, the use of either water or oil generally turns off beginners as they make a mess and maybe damage their system. There’s absolutely no inconvenience or risk with the Wusthof Precision Edge 2 Stage Knife Sharpener as it’s completely manual… and dry.
What I disliked
There’s no much to complain about with this product really. It does a job that more than justifies its price and it’s well designed. I think I should just skip this part! My only doubts would be in terms of the durability of this product if you put anything through it and use it at a very high frequency. Just use some common sense for what you paid for it.
So to sum it up, this might just be the simplest knife sharpening option ever conceived. There are nothing to learn or figure out besides sharpening your knives manually in the two slots. For beginners or those who don’t want to even waste time reading a manual for a knife sharpening product, this will be perfect.
It’s certainly great for a gift to anyone that would need one. It’s inexpensive, lasts a while and you can keep it in a drawer of your kitchen or bring it anywhere you go. I really have to give two thumbs up to my friend for finding this on Amazon , because I’ve just saved plenty of money that I will be able to spend elsewhere.
